They are the green crusaders on the move, having transformed their vehicles into miniature mobile gardens. It helps in keeping their passengers cool, and also contributes to a greener planet. Mahendra Kumar has planted around 25-30 plants on his auto. From fruits, flowering plants, vegetables, to even millets, his auto is nothing short of a delightful garden and as a bonus, it keeps the auto super cool. Yellow and green auto-rickshaws are ubiquitous on Delhi’s roads but Mahendra Kumar’s vehicle stands out — it has a garden on its roof aimed at keeping passengers cool even during the searing summer. Dhananjay Chakroborty, the taxi driver in Kolkata on the other hand has transformed his taxi ‘green’ with a rooftop garden on top. He calls it the ‘sabuj rath’ or the green chariot. In a city where most cab drivers are infamous for charging extra bucks or rudely refusing rides to passengers, soft-spoken Dhananjay Chakraborty and his taxi stand out. He often requests his passengers to plant more trees wherever they can.
