In what is believed to be the first in the country, the Greater Chennai Traffic Police (GCTP) has launched a special vehicle to rescue people and carry out emergency rescue operations in cases of accidents.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin Friday flagged off the vehicle ‘VEERA’ (Vehicle for Extrication in Emergency Rescue and Accidents) at the state police headquarters in Chennai. On the occasion, the rescue personnel performed a demonstration of the vehicle’s operation in the presence of the chief minister.
As part of the special road safety measures being adopted by the government, the vehicle, armed with all modern equipment, has been designed to rescue accident victims trapped in mangled and crashed vehicles. The vehicle will have crew trained in rescue efforts.
