China, Arunachal boy

China ‘finds’ Arunachal boy, identification process on

The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) of China has told the Indian Army that a teenager has been found on its side of the Line of Actual Control, but it is yet to be confirmed whether he is the same youth who went missing from the Upper Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh on January 18.

“The PLA has confirmed to their counterparts here that they have found a boy, who is from the Indian side,” the defence PRO based in Tezpur, Lt Col Harshvardhan Pandey, told TOI on Sunday.
It might take a week to ascertain whether the Indian youth is Miran Taron (17) who, the Arunachal East BJP MP Tapir Gao had alleged, was “abducted” by PLA soldiers on January 18.
The PLA will confirm the youth’s identity using photos and then start the process of sending him back. “Only one person is missing in that sector along the LAC. So, the teenager is in all probability Taron,” said a source.

The Indian Army had earlier sought assistance from the PLA through the established mechanism of a hotline. Taron and his friend Johny Yaiying, who belong to the Zido village in the Upper Siang district, were hunting in the border area when the incident took place.
Gao said Taron was abducted by the PLA from “inside Indian territory in the Lungta Jor area, where China has built a 3-4 km road inside India” in 2018. “His friend (Yaiying) escaped from the PLA and reported to the authorities. All the agencies of the government of India are requested to step up for his early release,” he had tweeted. Since then, the issue has triggered a political storm, with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his “silence” on Taron’s “abduction by China” just ahead of the Republic Day celebrations.
Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee president and former CM Nabam Tuki on Sunday also fired a salvo at the Centre and the ministry of defence (MoD) for not being able to come out with a clear statement on Taron.
“He is an innocent boy and went to his own territory in Arunachal Pradesh. Why is the Union government taking so long to get the boy released from China? Why has it been delayed so long and there is no official reaction from the government of India and MoD?” said Tuki.
